This famous quote is of Benjamin Franklin who rose to power in the U. S between the years to We may never know whether Wilbur Smith took this quotation to heart and used it as the inspiration behind his series about Egypt which has so far spanned 6 books. Wilbur has masterfully done both the things that Benjamin said in this quote — He wrote something really worth reading and also wrote it on the historical figures who did a lot that was worth writing!
The first book in the series was published all the way back in marking the dawn of a new era in the life of Wilbur Smith and his followers. Originally hailing from Zambia, Wilbur Smith was born in and to kindle the flame of the writer with in him, he set out to pursue his higher education in South Africa which is by far the most well developed country in the African Continent.
He chose the path of writing for him despite the fact that his family was not at all thrilled by his choice of career but he persisted; and eventually found such high fame that even he did not think that he would achieve this much. They were published in and respectively.
Talking broadly without giving any spoilers; the series follows the time in Egypt when Pharaohs ruled ancient Egypt and has a cast of likable characters with whom the reader can easily relate.
The story revolves around a kingdom built on gold, greed and war. As the men try to fight for the crown, only a handful of the people actually try to restore peace before realizing that the thirst for blood can only be quenched by blood itself. Some characters want gold, others pursue the crown while sum just want to avenge the deaths of their loved ones. It is a captivating story of love, deception, power struggle and the ruthlessness which takes a hold of men when they are blinded by rage or greed.
The narrative then shifts forward to a time of relative peace in which Royan Al Simmu — the main character of the series finds herself. But when a lost and forgotten treasure makes itself known to the world along with a riddle that has even the greatest of thinkers and knowledgeable people perplexed, she is forced to take refuge in England, away from her home and her loved ones as the land erupts with war once more.
Brother turns on brother, people are butchered like cattle because the others are willing to stop at nothing to claim the glory and the prize for them and them alone. This book adheres to powers un-imaginable by a common man which can only be summoned by the use of a special magic which has long been forgotten but has been revived.
As a result, Egypt is under threat once more by an abomination of evil beyond comprehension which threatens to overthrow the king and leave the kingdom in tatters and to destroy one person in particular who is was prophesized to be the prince that stands between the light and the darkness and restore order to the state.
Food gets less and less, livestock dwindle and human lives begin to succumb and perish to the harsh order of nature. Catastrophe befalls the nation like no other as they face a dilemma like none other. Just one man can be dependent upon at times like this and is summoned to the Pharaoh. Taita being the only man of knowledge is sent to the source of the river to find out the problem and rectify it before the kingdom falls and people begin to revolt against the Pharaoh.
Yet none of them have any idea of the horrors that lie ahead and the ambush that has been preplanned for the visitors by the enemies far and beyond at the end of their world. They must create a plan to dismantle and destroy the enemy that threatens the kingdom and restore its former peak.Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Want to Read saving…. His novels are set in Africa, the continent where the author was born and also the place he loved the most, and their plots usually have a political flavor. As a matter of fact, his dream was to be a journalist to explore social and political issues related to South Africa. His novels are divided into different groups, which he called series: the Courteney series, the Ballantyne series and the Egyptians series.
While his career was evolving, he also got married throughout his life he will marry 4 womenand his third wife, Danielle Antoinette Thomas with whom he married inbecame one of his greatest sources of inspiration. The woman, however, died on the 29th of December after a long illness.
As he lost her he also lost an important muse. The first twenty 20 publishers who review his work, in fact, reject him. This rejection, however, became a positive element for the artistic development of the author: in fact, he decides to focus first and foremost on what he loves, the fantastic African landscapes, the people who lived there, the African history and the wild flora and fauna of the continent.
It was, however, the meeting with Danielle that really pushed him towards the second phase of his professional blossoming. Thanks to her, the love scenes in his novels acquired a peculiar grace and the characters suddenly became more refined and credible. The complicity of the couple is also manifested in the dedications: every book Wilbur writes is dedicated to his wife. It is also said that he decided to begin a new book on every wedding anniversary.
Over the course of his career, the writer has sold over 80 million copies, and his novels have been translated into countless languages. The ingredients of its success are: precious materials, indigenous elements, wild animals, sweet and beautiful girls, young men, strong and determined, courageous women, death, blood, love, anger and betrayal — a mix of strong emotions.Purchasing power parity india
The places he describes are evocative, strong and wild, and the situations are often unexpected and shocking. As a child, Wilbur Smith loved reading C. Forester, John Buchan and H. Rider Haggard. He also wildly admired Lawrence Durrell, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck and Robert Graves, and, in some way, the influence of these great artists is extremely clear in his books.
He is truly a unique writer. Wilbur Smith currently lives in England, despite having always stated that he fells African and that Africa has always been his main inspiration. To be completely fair, he has never failed to express his concern about the struggles the nature and the people of his native-continent face everyday.Thinking out loud lyrics

Popular Authors C.Wilbur Addison Smith born 9 January is a South African Zambian-born novelist specialising in historical fiction about the international involvement in Southern Africa across four centuries, seen from the viewpoints of both black and white families.
An accountant by training, he gained a film contract with his first published novel When the Lion Feeds. He still acknowledges his publisher Charles Pick's advice to "write about what you know best", and his work takes in much authentic detail of the local hunting and mining way of life, along with the romance and conflict that goes with it.
As of his 35 published novels had sold more than million copies, 24 million of them in Italy. His father was a metal worker who opened a sheet metal factory and then bought a cattle ranch.
He was a boxer, a hunter, very much a man's man. I don't think he ever read a book in his life, including mine". As a baby, Smith was sick with cerebral malaria for ten days but made a full recovery.
On the ranch his companions were the sons of the ranch workers, small black boys with the same interests and preoccupations as Smith. With his companions he ranged through the bush, hiking, hunting, and trapping birds and small mammals.
His mother read to him every night and later gave him novels of escape and excitement, which piqued his interest in fiction; however, his father dissuaded him from pursuing writing. Unlike Smith's father and many others, the English master made it clear to Smith that being a bookworm was praiseworthy, rather than something to be ashamed of, and let Smith know that his writings showed great promise.
He tutored Smith on how to achieve dramatic effects, to develop characters, and to keep a story moving forward. On a positive note, he did start a school newspaper at Michaelhouse for which he wrote the entire content, except for the sports pages. His weekly satirical column became mildly famous and was circulated as far afield as The Wykeham Collegiate and St Anne's. Smith initially worked on his father's cattle ranch and also served with the Rhodesian Police.
Smith wanted to become a journalist, writing about social conditions in South Africa, but his father's advice to "get a real job" prompted him to become a tax accountant chartered accountant. He subsequently found work with the Inland Revenue Service.
His first attempt at a novel, The Gods First Make Mad was rejected, so for a time he returned to work as an accountant, until the urge to write once again overwhelmed him.
He tried another novel:. I wrote about my own father and my darling mother. I wove into the story chunks of early African history. I wrote about black people and white. I wrote about hunting and gold mining and carousing and women. I wrote about love and loving and hating. In short I wrote about all the things I knew well and loved better.
I left out all the immature philosophies and radical politics and rebellious posturing that had been the backbone of the first novel.
I even came up with a catching title, When the Lion Feeds. The characters' surname was a tribute to Smith's grandfather, Courtney James Smithwho had commanded a Maxim gun team during the Zulu Wars. Courtney James Smith had a magnificent mustache and could tell wonderful stories that had helped inspire Wilbur.
The book went on to be successful, selling around the world except in South Africa, where it was banned and enabling Smith to leave his job and write full-time.
It can be blown away by a careless word. InSmith said When the Lion Feeds remained his favourite because it was his first to be published. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find tuis matter to be reallly something which I think I would never understand.

With uncommon pairings like Florida State versus Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl and Penn State versus Washington in the Fiesta Bowl, there's very little historical data to go on. Luckily, you can enlist the help of Vegas legend Kenny White. He learned the bookmaking business on his father's knee. By age 24, he was running a sportsbook and, at 26, he was setting lines for Vegas' biggest casinos.
White is as good as it gets spotting a winner. In fact, he's a blistering 15-6 against the spread in his last 21 college football picks and a two-time winner of the prestigious Stardust Football Invitational.
There's no one better to help you make your college football bowl picks. Now, he's spent hours analyzing every bowl matchup and ordered every game by level of confidence. And he's only sharing it over at SportsLine.
One surprise we'll give away: White is calling for Auburn to fall in the Peach Bowl to UCF in a game he has at the very bottom of his list, for one point. Still, you need every point you possibly can to win your football pool. This one is all about who wants it more, and I'll take the Knights in an upset.
Meanwhile, he's assigning a huge point total of 38 to the Independence Bowl between Florida State and Southern Miss, and backing the Seminoles to win. SportsLine's advanced computer model agrees. It's calling for a 30-20 FSU win. Florida State is winning the game outright in 70 percent of simulations. Another college football pick he's high on: Michigan to roll South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. The Wolverines are 7. Don't be fooled by Michigan's two-game losing streak heading into the Outback Bowl.
The Wolverines played Top-10 teams in both games (Wisconsin, Ohio State) and now face a South Carolina squad that lost to two un-ranked teams and only defeated NC State, Louisiana Tech, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Florida by one score.
And they just fired their offensive coordinator. White is also assigning a high confidence ranking of 32 to a team that's favored by less than a field goal. White is highly confident in the winner, but many people in your pool may be skeptical. Picks like these could be the difference between winning your pool and going home empty-handed. So which teams should you rank in which order in your football confidence pools.
And what slight favorite do you need to be all-in on. Visit SportsLine to see the full bowl confidence picks, and see what teams won't disappoint, all from the Vegas legend who has made his living analyzing football, and find out.

I would be surprised if that unwelcome run ends following the visit of the champions, despite an improved showing from the Hammers at the Etihad last weekend. The hosts may well score but with Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata in such good form for the visitors, it is difficult to look beyond an away win. The last time Watford won at Turf Moor in the league (3-2, April 2004) a certain Sean Dyche was in the Watford side, but if there is to be a winner when the sides meet this weekend I think the Hornets can nick it.Cut across meaning in hindi
Watford have scored at least twice in their last eight away games in the Premier League and if they can maintain that sequence, they could take the points between two sides who have been outstanding in the first half of the season. Back-to-back 0-0 draws on the road for Crystal Palace and I think they will continue to climb the table against Bournemouth back on home soil. The Terriers have lost their last four Premier League games, are struggling for goals and I think these two newly promoted sides will share the spoils in a low scoring game.
The last time Alan Pardew managed a side at the Liberty Stadium (Crystal Palace, November 2016) they lost 5-4, but I would be surprised if we witnessed another nine-goal thriller at the weekend given the hosts have only had 27 shots on target in their 15 Premier League games so far this term.
